About this poll

Globally recognized major cities come from every continent, each with its own population, history and culture. This poll brings together cities from Europe to Asia, the Americas and Oceania rather than a single region.

What to consider

Historic texture, cultural diversity, transport infrastructure and quality of life are useful measures. A megacity like Tokyo and a small historic city like Dubrovnik are hard to compare directly, yet both are recognized worldwide in their own way.

How the list was built

This poll includes globally recognized cities whose location and basic character were verified through Wikipedia, mixing capitals, major metropolises and mid-sized historic cities from different continents.

About the options

Tokyo, Japan's capital, is one of the world's most populous cities with over 14 million residents. Paris and London are Europe's most visited capitals, while Rome, Venice and Florence represent Italy's historic heritage. Singapore and Hong Kong rank among Asia's financial centers, and Istanbul is the only Turkish city on the list, bridging two continents. Rio de Janeiro, Cape Town, New York and Sydney represent South America, Africa, North America and Oceania.
